Library Memories

Every week we take Nick to the library. We usually borrow three to five books, a couple of puppets, a movie (picked by Nick) and a computer game (again picked by Nick). It's a good deal as we read three stories to Nick each night before bed. This way we are not always reading the same ones over and over again (which shouldn't be a problem as Nick has several dozen books of his own).

Well tonight, Nick wanted a Star Wars book. So he got "The Star Wars StoryBook" written in 1977 by Geraldine Richelson. I had this book growing up. I remember reading it and acting it out with my action figures.

But now its even cooler. Because it was produced in conjunction with the movie but it appears to be printed prior to the final cut of the movie. Why do I say that? Well the book begins "In another galaxy, in another time..." not "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...". It contains pictures which did not make it into the film. Including ones of Luke in a horrible hat looking through binoculars at the fight between the Star Destroyer and Leia's cruiser. You can find a picture here.

It also includes pictures of Luke and Biggs on Tatooine, where Biggs confides to Luke that he is planning to join the rebellion. It calls the x-wings and TIE fighters planes. All in all a weird read.

Cool info, Pete. Early edits and demos can be an interesting look at what "could have been."

I remember the Marvel Comics adaptation of the first SW movie included a scene with Luke and Biggs on Tatooine that never made the movie.

I think I still have a Starlog or some such magazine with an advance story on "REVENGE of the Jedi" - One of the last working titles of the 3rd movie until Lucas or somebody probably decided that Jedi wouldn't seek 'revenge'

It was a good call. If only someone had had some good sense to tweak Jar Jar Binks and the entire Gungan race in preproduction for Ep. 1.
