Can you have a zoo without an elephant?
There are just some things we expect to see at a zoo. Lions, tigers, bears and elephants. But the Lincoln Park Zoo is sending its one remaining elephant away. Click Here for story.
This action has people asking, just what animals do you simply expect a zoo to have? It also brings to mind a recent show on NPR's Odyssey that discussed the evolution of zoos. Click here to listen to the program. So what must a zoo have?

Just came across your post and I wanted to say that the Detroit Zoo is having a similar problem...the two elephants we have were sick and they want them to be movied to a warmer climate but are having a hard time finding someone to take them...it's going to be sad having such a nice zoo without elephants, but I suppose it's in the best interest of the animals.

Brandon - Thanks for the comment. We take your 4 year old son to the Brookfield zoo outside of Chicago, and the first animals he demands to see are the giraffes and monkeys.
